How to read a chocolate-covered raisins label

A Raisinets box fits a lot on its back panel. Five lines tell you most of what you need: the serving, the sugars, the allergens, the kosher mark and the gluten free claim.

What is a serving of chocolate covered raisins?

On the Raisinets box a serving is 2 tbsp (24 g), which comes to 110 calories. Other brands print 28 g, 30 g or 40 g, so two labels only compare fairly per 100 grams.

A 3.1 oz theater box holds about 4 of those servings. The big jars use a bigger serving. Kirkland Signature counts about 20 pieces (40 g), so its 190 calories look much higher at first glance.

Total sugars and added sugars

The label prints two sugar lines, and the second sits inside the first. On the Raisinets milk chocolate box that is 15 g of total sugars, 8 g of them added.

The FDA does not count the sugars that occur naturally in fruit and milk as added, so the rest belongs to the raisins and the milk in the chocolate. The daily value behind the percentage is 50 grams of added sugars a day on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Four labels worth putting side by side

What does "may contain peanut" mean on Raisinets?

It is an advisory line about possible cross-contact, and the FDA says such statements are not required by law. The Raisinets label has 2 allergen lines: "Contains: milk, soy" and "May contain peanut".

The "Contains" line is the required one. It names any of the nine major food allergens that are in the recipe: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.

What does OU-D mean on a pack of chocolate raisins?

OU-D is the Orthodox Union's dairy mark: the product is dairy or has been on dairy equipment. In this lineup 2 products print it: Kirkland Signature Milk Chocolate Raisins and It's Delish Milk Chocolate Covered Raisins.

Other agencies use their own symbols. The table lists each mark as it is printed, with the word that follows it.

The gluten free line

The back of the 36 oz Raisinets bag prints "Gluten Free". Under the FDA rule a food that carries those words must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten.

The claim is voluntary, so a pack without it is not saying the opposite. Several other labels in the lineup mention equipment shared with wheat.

Milk, dark, semi-sweet: the legal words

Chocolate names on a label follow federal standards. Milk chocolate needs at least 10 percent chocolate liquor and 12 percent milk solids. Sweet chocolate needs 15 percent chocolate liquor, and semisweet or bittersweet needs 35 percent.

"Dark chocolate" has no standard of its own. That is how a tub can read "semi-sweet dark chocolate" and a box can read "dark chocolate" while both still list milkfat.

Milk against dark, label by label

Labels change, and none of this is medical or dietary advice. If you manage an allergy or a medical diet, go by the pack in your hand and ask your doctor.
